John Alfred Larsson (2 April – 18 March ) was a Swedish Salvationist, writer and composer of Christian music and hymns, who was the 17th General of The Salvation Army. Biography. The son of officer Sture Larsson and Flora Ethel Mildred Benwell, he spent his early years in his native Sweden, in Denmark. In he was appointed to International Headquarters as Assistant to the Chief of the Staff, where he was given the task of researching and planning for the separation of the international and United Kingdom national administrations. 25 March FOLLOWING the promotion to Glory of General John Larsson (Retired) on 18 March , the Chief of the Staff (Commissioner Lyndon Buckingham) sent out the following tribute to Salvation Army leadership around the world, reflecting upon the worldwide legacy and influence of General John Larsson, the Salvation Army's 17th. It is a scholarly description of seismic events in Salvation Army history, yet presented in such a way as to be immensely readable.
